Important Live Backgammon Tournaments

Important live Backgammon tournaments, unlike football and other tournaments are not organized by a single international body. Local bodies organize the tournaments and set the rules. As a result there are no uniform rules that apply to all tournaments. However, the rules are by and large similar and are often referred to as "commonly accepted rules of Backgammon".

The tournament rules lay down the procedures that players and directors must adhere to during the tournament. These rules specify the procedures to be followed while playing including the order of play, the handling of the dice, checkers and cube, scoring, ethics, errors, enforcement and dispute resolution. The tournament rules in this regard may differ from tournament to tournament.

Tournament formats include rules regarding entry and registration, fees, prizes, divisions and qualifications, number of rounds, match length, award of byes, nature of tournament, qualifying rounds and so on. These are again decided by the organizers of the tournaments.

In some countries live backgammon tournaments are organized at national levels. The British Isles Backgammon Association and the National Federations of Denmark, Sweden and Norway organize the tournaments at a National level. Several new countries have entered the arena with national level tournaments being organized. The newer nations include Ireland, Japan and France. However, there are still countries in which popular important live Backgammon tournaments are being held for several decades with no formal body that organizes and manages the tournament. These include the live backgammon tournaments being held by Monaco, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Spain, Thailand, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia.

Live backgammon tournaments are about playing against a pre-assigned player for a pre-determined number of points. Points can be awarded for single game wins or gammons (double points) or backgammons (triple points). This is multiplied by the value of the doubling cube. The number of players is also reduced to half after each round of the game. Finally only two players will remain and one of them will be the winner.

The most famous and popular important live Backgammon tournament is the Monte Carlo tournament of US. This tournament is scheduled once in a year and is regarded as the World Championship of backgammon. The best players around the world compete for the award at three different levels-championship, intermediate and beginners. The price is monetary.

The next live tournament that attracts attention is the Nevada State Championship. This is conducted by the Nevada Backgammon Association and is one of the larges tournaments in the US. The association also has similar tournaments at Las Vegas and Chicago.

The other backgammon tournaments that are considered very important by the players are: The Atlanta Backgammon Association tournament, Beltway Backgammon club tournament and Backgammon by the Bay.

A number of important live Backgammon tournaments also take place outside the US. These are largely concentrated in the Europe. The Nordic Open Tournament is conducted by the Danish Backgammon Federation. It is one of the biggest tournaments of the Nordic countries. In England the Backgammon tournament is conducted at Oxford. This tournament is called the Gommonitis League Tournament. Another famous live backgammon tournament is held at Norway.

Of more recent origin are several important live online backgammon tournaments. The prizes awarded for these tournaments are also monetary.

The most famous online tournament is the FIBS tournaments which include the Swiss Tournament, the team league, the Folkman Tourney or the Rating championship. Other online tournaments of note are the Elite League, the GammonZone Tournament, and the International Backgammon Alliance and so on. Most of the popular online backgammon tournaments take place on the GammonEmpire / Play65 client.

Online Backgammon tournaments are classified into three categories - the Filling the list tournament, the tournament event and the Satellite tournament. The GammonEmpire client has also a special category of tournament called the Swing backgammon tournament.
